VANCOUVER, B.C. – September 9, 2026 – The Green Channel begins streaming The Last Howl in Canada today, five days after the US president signed an executive order directing the US Interior Department to determine whether gray wolves and Mexican gray wolves should be removed from the federal endangered species list.
The film took twenty years to make. In 2004, brothers Matt and Troy Paproski began raising wolves in Alberta. Their work was upended when Troy suffered a stroke and had to step away. Feeling loss, government scrutiny and financial hardship, Matt carried on alone, held to the project by his bond with the animals. Troy later rejoined the production, using a wheelchair, and is credited as a co-host.
“This epic wildlife documentary took twenty years and evolved into a unique story meshing the importance of both wildlife conservation and inclusiveness of people with disabilities,” said producer and director Matthew Todd Paproski of Starland Studios. “We appeal to the world to watch our film to get a better perspective on these controversial predators.”
The soundtrack draws on artists well outside the usual range of an independent documentary. Los Lobos contributed their song Will the Wolf Survive as the theme. Blue Öyster Cult provided an unreleased acoustic version of Don’t Fear the Reaper. Composer Ronald Riddle wrote the original score and contributed tracks from his prog-rock band Happy the Man.
The Last Howl had its world premiere at the Calgary Justice Film Festival in 2025 and has since collected awards including Best Nature / Wildlife Film and Best Director Documentary Feature at the Cannes World Film Festival, a Special Jury Award at the Los Angeles Film Awards and a win at the San Diego Independent Cinema Awards. It has also been an official selection at Festiver Green Film Festival in Colombia, Red Movie Awards in France and BIG SYN International Film Festival in London.
“This screening represented the highest attendance for an independent film shown at Drumheller’s Napier Theatre during our ownership,” said Thyra Smith, owner of the Napier Theatre in Drumheller.
