Houston, Texas – August 24, 2026 – Several months after a rare Meteorite crashed into a home in Houston, the public can now see dozens of rare photographs surrounding the event.
Since modern Meteorite tracking started over 60 years ago, only about a dozen Meteorites have ever entered homes in the world, and it has never happened in Houston, until recently. In March 2026 at the home of Sherrie James in the Ponderosa Forest area north of Houston, a Meteorite came crashing through the roof of the home and landed inside a bedroom. Sherrie James and her family were inside the Houston home when the Meteorite struck. Thankfully, no one was hurt. The Meteorite caused damage to the roof, floor, and ceiling. The impact left behind an amazing record of what can happen when a rock from space reaches Earth and lands in a home.
The Houston Meteorite quickly attracted attention from scientists and Meteorite experts. NASA scientist Marc Fries became involved in examining the unusual event, along with researchers Neeraja Chinchalkar and Rice University Professor Bidong Zhang. They responded to the Houston area home of Sherrie James to examine the Meteorite and request a slice for research. The Meteorite itself provides important clues about its journey through space and its trip through the Earth’s atmosphere. The space rock traveled millions of miles and missed Sherrie James and her family by only a few feet. The Meteorite is estimated to be around 4.5 billion years old, almost the age of Earth itself. Its dark outside surface known as fusion crust shows signs of the intense heat it experienced before reaching the Houston area at over 30,000 mph.
Now, months after the Meteorite event, photographer Timothy Courtney is releasing rare photographs that document the story. The photographs also provide a close look at the Meteorite that is difficult to see in most pictures, and in its original state before researchers sliced it.
